Project #1: Developing Evidence-Based and Community-Informed Training for Florida’s Oral Health Workforce on Risk Factors for Obesity and Dental Health

The purpose of this project is to develop evidence-based and community-informed materials and provide trainings for Florida dental providers in selected 5 counties to address common risk factors for childhood obesity and dental caries and then disseminate these trainings/materials and tools statewide.

Dental Caries in Children

  2. Caries Risk factors
    • Sugar-sweetened beverages
  3. Caries Prevention recommendations
    • Fluorides, fluoride varnish
    • 38% SDF
    • Motivational interviewing

Course 2

Childhood Obesity

Modules:

  1. Childhood Obesity
    • Introduction to obesity and dental caries from a public health point of view
    • Etiology and epidemiology of obesity
    • Social determinants of health
    • Risk Factors
  2. Diet/nutrition
    • Sugar-sweetened beverages
  3. Obesity prevention recommendations
    • Strategies for providers to reduce or prevent obesity in dental settings
    • Motivational interviewing in dental and medical settings
